A Second Target Is Coming to Southwest Fort Worth. Here's Everything We Know.

Construction records filed with the state now confirm what southwest Fort Worth has been watching take shape for two years: a new Target is under construction at Chisholm Trail Parkway and McPherson Boulevard, and it's just one piece of a shopping center that's been fighting its own growing pains.

The Numbers

According to a project registration filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the new store, listed as Target T-2935 Fort Worth Chisholm Trail, sits at 5900 Retail Way, on the northwest corner of Chisholm Trail Parkway and McPherson Boulevard (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation [TDLR], 2024). The filing puts the building at 148,827 square feet, with an estimated construction cost of $22 million. Construction started in October 2024, and the completion date on file is August 22, 2026 (TDLR, 2024).

That date is worth a pause. A completion date on a state construction filing is not the same thing as an opening day. Stores still need to stock shelves, hire and train staff, and clear final inspections after the building itself is done. Target has said publicly it expects to open the store in fall 2026, and job postings for the location are already up.

Not a Replacement

The closest existing Target to this site is the SuperTarget near Bryant Irvin Road and I-20, about six miles north (Leclercq, 2024). That store is still open, still fully staffed, with no closure announced. So when this one opens, it's not swapping one store for another. It's the first Target location in this specific part of Fort Worth, giving residents south of the Chisholm Trail corridor a much shorter drive than the one they've been making for years.

It's Not Just a Target

The Target is the anchor, but it's not the whole story. The land sits inside a larger development called The Shops at Chisholm Trail Ranch, and H-E-B has owned roughly 15 acres on the north side of McPherson Boulevard since March 2023 (Rudolph, 2023). H-E-B has stayed quiet on a timeline, saying only that the purchase was made "in anticipation of future needs" (Rudolph, 2023), but a land purchase of that size from a grocery chain that builds methodically is generally read as a strong signal, not a maybe.

Restaurants have already been filling in around the edges. Chick-fil-A, Whataburger, Chili's, and Raising Cane's are open along McPherson, and a 3,800-square-foot McDonald's, paired with a CosMc's, has been working through pre-development (Audacy, 2024). For a corridor that was mostly cleared dirt a few years ago, that's a fast build-out.

The Sign the City Said No To

Here's the detail most people driving past this construction site don't know about. In May, the Fort Worth Board of Adjustment rejected a sign proposed for the shopping center for being too large under the city's zoning rules (Fort Worth Report, 2026). The sign, meant to advertise Target and the other retailers in the center, was proposed at more than 20 feet wide with a 258-square-foot messaging area. City ordinance caps that kind of sign at 12 feet wide and 200 square feet.

The developer, United Commercial Development of Dallas, had already cut the total number of planned signs for the center from 14 down to seven before the vote, and it still wasn't enough for the board to approve the oversized version (Fort Worth Report, 2026). It's a small story next to a 148,827-square-foot Target, but it's the kind of detail that shows how much back-and-forth goes into a project like this before a single shopper ever walks through the doors.

What It Means If You Live Out Here

Growth like this rarely shows up in isolation. When a Target, an H-E-B, and four national restaurant chains all commit to the same half-mile stretch within a couple of years of each other, it's usually a lagging indicator of population growth that already happened, not a leading one. Retailers like Target and H-E-B run their own site-selection data long before they buy land, and that data is generally built around rooftops that already exist or are already permitted.

For homeowners near Chisholm Trail Parkway and McPherson, that's relevant to more than convenience. Commercial build-out at this scale tends to support home values in the surrounding neighborhoods over time, and it's one of the questions I get most often from buyers looking at this part of southwest Fort Worth: is the growth here just getting started, or is it already priced in? That's not a one-line answer, and it depends on which street you're looking at.
